Using Limpet Heaters to Keep Flanges from Viscous Blockages

This is the simplest form of OmegaLimpet. It uses a MicroLimpet as the heat source and the aluminium 'omega' adaptor block is custom made to fit snugly onto the flange, where it is secured using a long blot that nips the 'legs' together.

Flanges on pipes, pumps, valves, meters and other industrial process equipment are notorious for freezing up in cold weather and are challenging to heat using traditional heating systems, such as electrical trace heating or hot water.

Flanges act as big radiators of heat, giving off as much heat as about 1metre of pipework.

Using Limpet Heating's unique 'OmegaLimpet' approach, the problem of viscous products blocking in flanges has been proven to be eliminated.

Flanges can be heated using several different types of Limpet:

For accurate temperature control the microprocessor controlled AlphaLimpet.
For fixed pre-set temperature control up to 250°C the
OmegaLimpet or BetaLimpet.

For variable, accurate temperature control (using a temperature dial), the MaxiLimpet.

For larger pumps requiring multiple heaters, an AlphaLimpet or MegaLimpet in combination with 'slave' MicroLimpets or BetaLimpets.

Flange heating application examples

We have used the 'Omega' concept in numerous different ways:

On a variety of pumps that have one of more flanges and where heating the flanges also heats the pump body by conduction, keeping the product flowing. The types of pumps where this method of heating can be used include centrifugal, diaphragm and screw pumps.

On a variety of valves, using a similar concept, and including ball, gate, plug, diaphragm, pinch, butterfly, globe, needle, check (non-return), safety and relief valves.

On flow meters, including Coriolis meters, electromagnetic flow meters and turbine meters.
On large flanges. In this case, more than one heater and multipe adaptor blocks are used, as showin this this video.

The Limpet Heating Story

This was a new installation for a Dutch company.

The meter was installed in a cage with difficult access. Because of its relatively small size an unusual shape, it required a bespoke design consisting of two 'omega' adaptor blocks attached to an aluminium plate onto which the AlphaLimpet was attached
